A picture of Kerala from the Colonial times

The history of Kerala dates back to as early as 5000BC. The carvings on Edakkal caves indicate a presence of a prehistoric settlement in this region. Formerly known as Chera Nadu, this state was known to be a major trade centre for spices. The ports here were known to be the busiest with various connections, especially with the French.

Kerala also has a presence in various religious texts, especially the Hindu texts. The official state of Kerala was formed in 1956 from former state of Travancore- Cochin, the Malabar distract of the Madras state and the Kasargod district of Dakshina Kannada.
