The native people of the state of Gujarat are known as Gujaratis. The population consists of a collective of people of various different tribes such as Rabaris, Kutchis, Kolis, Jats etc. The Gujaratis are known to be very strongly rooted to their ancient traditions and follow a very orthodox way of living.
The population in Gujarat stands at 60,383,328 as per the 2011 census. The religious makeup in Gujarat was 88.6% Hindu, 9.7% Muslim, 1.0% Jain, 0.5% Christian, 0.1% Sikh, 0.05% Buddhist and 0.04% others.
Gujarat is also known to be the birthplace of many legends and scholars. Gandhiji, who is the father of the nation, was born here at Porbandhar. Sardar Vallabhai Patel who was a statesman and responsible for the political integration of the country was from this state. The statue of unity (world’s tallest statue) is built in his memory and stands tall in this state. It is also the hometown of the current Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi.
Famous physicists like Vikram Sarabhai who is the father of India’s Space program and Homi Baba the father of Indian nuclear program and Bhaba Atomic research centre are from this state. It is also home to some of the greatest industrialists the world has seen like Jamshedji Tata (founder of Tata group of companies), Azim Premji (Chairman of Wipro ltd.) and Dhirubhai Ambani (founder of Reliance industries).
