• The weather in Varanasi is rather hot, so light cotton clothing is preferred.

• For evenings, carry a shawl or sweater, especially in the winter months (December – February).

• Avoid clothes that might reveal the shoulders, legs and deep necklines.

• It is also best to avoid street food if one has a sensitive stomach.

• Hats, sunglasses, sun-cream, small foldable umbrellas. and mosquito repellent is advised.

• Shoes should be easy to wear on and take off, easy to walk, and not expensive. Carry many pairs of cheap socks which you might feel tempted to throw.

• Carry perfume in your bag since smells on the ghats can be overwhelming and you might want to spritz a tissue and hold it close to your nose.

• Be advised that taking pictures of colourful religious men and women can cost you money. Before taking pictures always ask permission and ask how much.

• Be careful of the helpful taxi or rickshaw driver who wants to take you shopping to his uncle’s store!

• Carry your own medication.
